The nominees are in, after
the CMA flipped off the entire genre by allowing Steven Tyler and Kelsea Ballerini to announce them this morning on Good Morning America. Here are the nominees, predictions, and some personal commentary.
Musician of the Year
Sam Bush (mandolin) [yes, apparently mandolins are still in country music somewhere, who knew?]
Jerry Douglas (dobro)
Paul Franklin (steel guitar) [see above comment about mandolin]
Dan Huff (guitar)
Mac McAnally (guitar)
Prediction: Mac McAnally–He has won for the past seven years, and I doubt many artists voting have much of an idea what a “mandolin,” “steel guitar,” or “dobro,” is, so Dan Huff is the only one with a shot of defeating him.
Preference: none
Music Video of the Year
Interestingly, this category is female-dominated…I guess in videos, females are okay.

Notes: Glad to see Stapleton with a nomination here, but if Sam Hunt wins this, as he undoubtedly will, my days of watching the CMA’s are done indefinitely.

Preference: Out of these, “Girl Crush” hands down. While I like all of them except “Take Your Time”–if that wins, above Sam Hunt rules apply–I could have thrown a rock and hit better Song of the Year nominees. Jason Isbell, Alan Jackson, Kacey Musgraves, Ashley Monroe, shall I go on?

Note: Again, good to see Stapleton with a nomination, as well as Dave Cobb, who produced Jason Isbell and Lindi Ortega’s remarkable albums as well. The CMA might actually get it right here and vote in Pageant Material which would be a great selection, although there are other albums that deserve to be nominated along with it besides these.

Entertainer of the Year

Miranda Lambert [but she’s 20% of the category, so won’t the viewing audience drop drastically?]

Some of the nominations here are ridiculous, although I shouldn’t be surprised. How on earth is Thompson Square nominated as Vocal Duo? Their latest single “Trans Am” bombed, while Big & Rich’s latest single has at least made it into the Top 30 (which is basically all a duo needs to do to get a nomination), so I’d imagine Big & Rich would be a more appropriate choice. Thomas Rhett was nominated as New Artist last year. LeeAnn Womack being nominated for Female Artist Of The Year is laughable; Ashley Monroe, Reba, and Jana Kramer would all be much more relevant choices. “I Don’t Dance” was nominated for Single Of The Year last year, so why nominate it for Song Of The Year this year? -__-
Seriously, the only reasons I will be watching these will be a) to see if Brad and Carrie have some good jokes to make, and b) to see if Chris Stapleton or Maddie & Tae win anything.
Add to those reasons: to see if Jason Aldean thros a temper tantrum about his lack of nominations…yeah, Jana Kramer and Reba would have been better choices too, but they are just writing down the first names they can think of in order to get five; after all, the only female that matters is Miranda Lambert, and I’m not so sure she’d matter at all if they didn’t have to have an award for this. I thought the same thing about Big & Rich.
Why the “LOL” for Lee Ann Womack? She’s incredible. I absolutely adore her and her album last year is absolutely amazing.
Should have clarified this better…it is not so much for Womack as for the context, as I think she was probably nominated more because they need a female than because they appreciate her work. I appreciate her work and her last album, but with the CMA’s track record of female vocalist nominations, I feel like they just threw out a name and it happened to be someone who deserved some recognition. Also, I think there are others who are more relevant, including Ashley Monroe, Jana Kramer, and Reba, who deserve to be nominated along with LeeAnn, especially if Kelsea Ballerini is in the category.
